Fighting Transport Poverty

Jude and Lizzie student respresentatives at the Zoom Beyond Pass rally

Jude and Lizzie alongside student representatives of Uni of Sheffield, Hallam Uni, Sheffield Tech College & Better Buses, at the rally to reinstate the lower fares of the Zoom Beyond Pass.

On Saturday, Jude led a rally in protest against the inflation of Zoom Beyond Pass prices, which has affected students and young people across the city.

Whilst celebrating the success of the Zoom Pass (including providing the cheapest fares for 18-21 year olds since June 2021, countrywide), we also listened to concerns from representatives of Sheffield Technical College, Sheffield Hallam University, and the University of Sheffield, about the impact of raising bus prices.

For many young people, public transport is their only route to school, college, work, healthcare, and other amenities. A small hike in prices, when so many are still struggling with the impact of the Cost of Living Crisis, can severely reduce the opportunities available to many of our young people, particularly in marginalised communities.

Jude’s lobbying, in conjunction with Oliver Coppard, has persuaded First and Stagecoach to cap the Zoom fare at £1.50, instead of £2.50 (although this is still higher than we would like).

Jude and Lizzie also spoke to the attendees about the aims of A Fleet For Change, and we're really excited to be building relationships with them to continue our vital work.

We believe in transport accessibility and equity for all, and will continue to fight transport poverty alongside the amazing community we have here in Sheffield.

We'd recommend checking out Oliver Coppard's campaign.
